Oh! I loved this one as a kid! I'll admit, though, Meg was not the most likable character. I like her better as the series goes on. I did love the planet with the creatures who couldn't see--at 10 that was a mind-blowing idea! Since the other books (except for Many Waters and A Swiftly Tilting Planet) have a female protagonist your son may not be interested in them. But if you happen to know any awkward tweens/teenage girls, they might love them!
My boys loved it--they don't seem bothered by female protagonists. (They loved Princess Academy, although I admit that they were put off by the title until they were told that Sister A recommended it for them--they love Sister A!)
I haven't read it lately, but I loved it as a girl. Fantasy has never been my favorite, but I was thinking about reading it with my 9year old this summer. Maybe too old for him? I found him reading my copy of True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle the other day, and I realized I better get more proactive with his bookshelf. Thanks for the reviews.
I don't think it would be too old for him . . . my almost-7-yo and my barely-10-yo loved listening to this.
