I normally like Bill Bryson quite a bit, but I think he shot himself in the foot by writing a book that is, to paraphrase, true except for the parts that aren't. It wasn't as funny this way--it was just mindless.

That's too bad. I normally like him, too, though I wasn't exactly thrilled with his last one (A Complete History of Everything). I'll probably get around to reading this one, though, if only so I can continue to say I've read everything by him. :)
