Confederates in the Attic by Tony Horwitz

Wow. I loved this book. It takes real talent to handle so many diverse stories (hard-core Civil War reenactments, the battle over the rebel flag, Gone with the Wind, history in the Alabama schools, etc.), to tell them with a fair hand, and to keep such heavy topics light. This book is a model for what good nonfiction can be. Highly recommended.

Glad you liked it; it's one of the few books on the south that Southerners actually like. They felt like he was being fair to their "side"... don't bother with his one on Captian Cook, though. Good idea, except he spends most of the book getting smashed. That doesn't make for great reading.

His book on Baghdad and the Middle East is good, though.

Melisssa, I actually loved Blue Latitudes, but I have this thing about Australia and seafaring AND I'm weak on WoW enforcement of others. (grin)
