State of Wonder by Ann Patchett

Lyrical writing, a suspenseful story, and trenchant social commentary. Recommended.

Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine

Very moving.

Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir by Jennette Fulda

Funny and interesting.

Black Water Rising by Attica Locke

I loved this--a great combination of intersting story, social commentary, and local color.

The Big Short by Michael Lewis

Fascinating. Highly recommended.

The Cabinet of Curiosities by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

Decent fluff.

Honolulu by Alan Brennert

Lovely. This and Molokai secure Brennart's place as one of my very favorite writers of historical fiction. Recommended.

Master of the Delta by Thomas H. Cook

meh

(And there is NO WAY he would have been allowed to teach like that, especially in a small southern town sixty years ago.)

The Epistle to the Galatians by F. F. Bruce

A decent commentary, although I am still no fan of Paul.

Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America by David Hackett Fischer

Absolutely fascinating. Highly recommended.

What Hath God Wrought by Daniel Walker Howe

Some parts = fascinating.
Many parts = skimmed.

In the Garden of Beasts by Eric Larson

So very disappointing.

Gap Creek by Robert Morgan

Depressing, but lovely.

The New Yorker

Have I mentioned how much I love reading The New Yorker on my Kindle? Because I look forward to 8pm Sunday night, when it automatically arrives, with an unreasonable amount of glee.

The Center of Everything by Laura Moriarty

I really liked this.

Brown v. Board of Education and the Civil Rights Movement by Michael J. Klarman

This could have been so much better.

On The Wings of Heroes by Richard Peck

I read this to the boys; they thought it was funny and I thought it had nice historical detail.

Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks

Immensely satisfying.

The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe

Pure fluff, but I loved it. A very engaging read!

Little Pink House by Jeff Benedict

A fascinating story and a finely written book.
