Fun fact: Lowry inserts a story about a Nazi soldier watching the king on his daily horse ride among the people, and wonders aloud, "Where are his bodyguards?" and a little boy answers something like "We all are." That is a real story, though I think it's probably an urban legend--it is at any rate a real urban legend apparently dating from the war. (It also makes more sense in Danish, where the boy answers "Det er vi allesammen."
