Why on earth is this book so popular? The characters are one dimensional and the writing is ham-fisted.

This was an odd book. I sometimes suspect that books that are at all historically based are wildly popular because people feel smarter as if they are reading something very deep and rich, even if it's basically a chick-let romance set in, say, the Vietnam era.
Yes! I had that same thought.
While I'm all for learning about history through novels, it doesn't mean the novel has to stink.
I don't usually read Novels. However, this summer I picked up "The Help" and "Sarah's Key". I probably picked these books up due to some history-base. I found "Sarah's Key" an interesting read. In fact towards the end, I could not put it down. Looking forward to seeing the movie. Highly recommend.
