Nope . . . have you?
Yes, I have! I love the Maisie Dobbs books. I love the setting -- post World War I. I love the audacity of a young woman solving mysteries that are full of details that reflect the personalities of the people involved. It is 'fluff' reading for me and very enjoyable. I've never really thought about the writing being bad. I have noticed that the quality of books goes down (only slightly) for each new book in the series with the first one being the absolute best one of all. Sorry you didn't like it AT All!
Well, you have certainly tempted me to try the earlier ones . . . what appealed to me about this in the first place was the setting. But I found it hard to keep the characters straight and the writing was mediocre. Also, it seemed more that the mystery solved itself than that she did anything.
I just read the first one this month for Tell Me What to Read. And I quite liked it even though, yes, the mystery did indeed solve itself. But I liked Maisie and I really like things set during WWI. And I listened to it and the narrator had a British accent. So of course I liked it.
