Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth

You know, I watched one episode of this but wasn't too impressed.  The book, on the other hand, was fascinating and very moving. (And, FYI, very graphic--not just the childbirth parts, but also a description of a prostitute's life.)  The depiction of poverty and deprivation was horrifying--I couldn't put this book down.
